City gets money for trail network

The City of Port Alberni has received almost $450,000 from the province to join two popular trail networks together.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the connecting of Roger Creek trails with the Scott Kenney trails has been a priority for a few years.
“It’s a project we’ve been working on for a long time,” she said. “We’ve had plans ready to go, we’ve applied for funding multiple times and we’ve never been successful, so it’s a really exciting project and we’re thrilled to have $450,000 from the province now for it.”
Minions said the city will have to come up with partial matching funding of $290,000 which isn’t in this years budget.
She said that, combined with the difficulties in finding engineers and contractors now, could delay the project to next year.
