Raw log shipments were down considerably last year according to statistics from the Port Alberni Port Authority.
14 freighters were loaded last year compared with 24 the year before.
Mike Carter, the Port’s VP of Operations said while domestic tonnage was down by 2%, international log exports were down by more than half, from 500 to 240,000 metric tonnes.
“A little extended summertime this year so the bush was down later in the year and a little longer than most years so that means we didn’t get a really strong finish for log exports at the end of 2022,” he said.
Carter said the Port has seen a steady decrease in log shipments since 2013, and there hasn’t been any lumber shipped since 2017.
