The fast actions of a tenant prevented a possible major fire incident this morning.
Port Alberni Fire Department Deputy Chief Wes Patterson said some clothes were lit on fire in the foyer of an apartment building on Third near Athol.
“The alarm system activated and one of the residents quite quickly extinguished it with a fire extinguisher. We arrived on scene and cleared the smoke from the hallway,” he said. “Thankfully , quick actions kept damage to a minimum, but definitely quite concerning for us.”
Because the building is a 3-storey, multi-family structure, all valley fire departments were called out but were dismissed soon after arriving.
No one was injured or displaced, and the RCMP are now investigating.
