Twenty-six people died of drug overdoses last year in Alberni – Clayoquot.
Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said both the Central Island and Alberni set new records for drug toxicity related deaths last year.
“Drug toxicity remains the leading cause of unnatural deaths in BC, significantly surpassing the total of deaths due to motor vehicle incidents, self-harm and homicides combined,” she said.
The Coroner’s Report released last week also shows that drug toxicity deaths almost doubled during Income Assistance payment weeks.
A record 159 people died in the Central Island Region last year, but drug deaths dropped 1.5% province-wide with more than 2200 deaths.
