The province will be spraying for Spongy Moth Caterpillars in an area around Malabar Drive this Spring.
Formerly known as Gypsy Moths, the hungry insects can defoliate trees in a matter of weeks, and kill it after a year or two of infestation.
According to a recent survey, Port Alberni had a “hot spot” of 56 moths, which represented 16% of all moths found in BC.
Technicians will spray the area with the biological insecticide BTK, which is a bacteria found naturally in soil that makes spongy moths ill.
The Province is hosting a public online Open House via Zoom on January 23 at 7:30pm.
We’ve posted a map of the 763 hectare spraying area on our PEAK Facebook page
