Shelter workers face layoff

The 48 people who work at the Port Alberni Shelter could be out of work as of March 31st.
They heard the news yesterday at a meeting with BC Housing, who announced they are looking for a new contractor to run the shelter service.
No reason was given for the change in contractors, with representatives saying it’s before the courts and in the hands of various lawyers and they’re not allowed to comment.
Shelter residents we spoke to said they’re worried for the staff members they have come to trust.
“They blindsided them and everytime a new contract comes up some people lose their jobs and these people will be out of work,” said James.
“I hope we don’t lose Carrie and some of the other staff, they’re excellent,” added April.
In a statement sent to 93.3 The PEAK, BC Housing said, “BC Housing has a duty to shelter guests and supportive housing residents, as well as the community of Port Alberni to ensure shelters and supportive housing are appropriately operated and that residents and staff are safe and supported. We have notified Port Alberni Shelter Society (PASS) that BC Housing will be seeking a new operator for the supportive housing and shelter located at 3939 8th Avenue. Over the next three months, we will be working with front line staff at PASS and partners to ensure that this transition is seamless for residents and clients and that shelter services continue.”
BC Housing says they have issued a request for proposals for a new contractor, and unionized staff may be able to re-apply for their jobs.
