Alberni women appointed to forestry council

Mayor Sharie Minions has been chosen to be a part of a new provincial forestry council.
The Forestry Worker Supports and Community Resiliency Council will advise the Province on improvements to existing programs and the development of new initiatives aimed at supporting forestry workers and rural economies.
Minions said the group had their first meeting earlier this week, and she’s especially pleased that Jolleen Dick from Hupacasath is also on the council.
“There’s no other forest-reliant communities that have two local people on the committee,” she said. “We’re very happy to be there together and looking forward to the work that happens.”
The last BC Budget included $185 million over three years to provide co-ordinated and comprehensive supports for forestry workers, industry, communities and First Nations who may be affected by new restrictions on old growth logging.
Minions said the goal is to ensure community voices are included in provincial forestry decisions.
