Increased theft of small items and copper wire from the former Somass Sawmill caused the city to begin their own demolition work.
They hired Bowerman Contracting to begin demolition, recovering valuable metals and selling it to the local foundry.
City CAO Tim Pley said they paid $33,000 towards the demolition and recovered $29,000 through copper sales.
The presence of workers has also served to keep other metal-hunters out of the facility.
He said he has received a lot of interest in some of the componants on the site, and said selling items would reduce the burden on the city and ultimately reduce demolition costs.
