Janis Joseph tops School Board vote

Janis Joseph received almost 4,000 votes in her bid to be on the School Board – more than a thousand votes more than returning board chair Pam Craig.

Joseph comes from a family synonymous with protecting education and says she intends to continue that tradition.

“I ran in honour of my Dad who was a very great proponant to the education system; he believed in it and so do i,” she said. “So if I can carry on his legacy in any way I’m more than happy to jump in there and keep walking.”

Joseph says she will champion increased representation for indigenous students, and students of colour, and joins incumbent board members Christine Washington and Larry Ransom, and newcomers Helen Zanette and Cherilyn Bray.

At the regional distict office, Penny Cote returns as the representative for Sproat Lake, while Susan Roth will be representing Beaver Creek and Mike Sparrow appears to have defeated challenger Darren Deluca in Cherry Creek, but a recount has been ordered as only 4 votes separates them.
