The city is moving ahead with plans to provide better homes to people living in run-down trailers on 4th Avenue.
City Council voted unanimously to provide a temporary use permit on three commercial lots, and lease the lands to the Port Alberni Friendship Centre for a dollar.
Mayor Sharie Minions said addressing poverty and homelessness on 4th Avenue has become an emergency situation.
“We’re really looking forward to moving some of the most vulnerable members of our community from incredibly substandard housing into something that will be a safe alternative for them,” she said.
Minions said the pods are currently being built to house 30 people, and they hope to have the site operational before winter.
The city will contribute $140,000 to the low barrier shelter project for utilities, fencing and security.
