Following a trend throughout the mid-island region, Port Alberni’s crime rate continues to increase.
Violent crimes are up by 16% and property crimes increased 14% this past quarter, compared with the same time period last year.
Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Eric Rochette says the numbers are being affected by a few prolific offenders.
“When you look at the crime severity index for a communuity like Port Alberni you need just a few really major incidents to screw the numbers and that’s when you’ll see a significant increase,” he said.
Rochette says there was recently two separate cases where one person went on a short crime spree amassing 14 charges within a couple of days.
On the positive side, he said domestic violence and mental health cases have decreased since the lifting of COVID restrictions.
