Sproat Lake name change proposed

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Board has been asked to consider renaming Sproat Lake to the Hupacasath name Klehkoot.

Joshua Dahling recently moved here from the lower mainland, and told the board he believes a change is in need after reading Gilbert Sproat’s book ‘Scenes and studies of savage life’ written in the 1860’s

“I had read the book and it just bothered me,” he said. “Knowing the history of the lake I felt it was appropriate for us to try to reset that energy by having Gilbert Sproat’s name removed from the lake.”

Dahling said Sproat’s book is filled with anti-native racist statements.

He admitted he hasn’t spoken to Hupacasath or Tseshaht about the idea, but he’s hoping the regional district will.
