Council Code of Conduct in development

City Council will begin working on a code of conduct for future council members, after councillor Helen Poon was forced to apologize for renovating the Kingsway Hotel without municipal permits.
Mayor Sharie Minions said that incident was the impetus for a clear code of conduct to be developed.
“Although it’s always unfortunate to feel like you need to build a Council code of conduct, it is easier to build it following something not moving forward perfectly or there being an incident because then we understand more of what the need is, why it’s so critically important and we can put our minds more meaningfully to why we’re bringing it forward and in what type of circumstances it may be relevant,” she said.
Minions said council will meet with a facilitator and draft the code of conduct on their own in order to have real ownership of the process and final document.
They plan to have the code finalized and in place in advance of the municipal election in October.
