Port Alberni is becoming a hub for coastal clean-up companies.
Western Canada Marine Recovery Corporation was the first to announce a new waterfront building and marina, now Tofino’s Coastal Restoration Society will base their west coast operations here.
The Coastal Restoration Society specializes in marine clean-up projects like retrieving ghost gear, removing derelict vessels, and developing strategies against invasive species.
Mayor Sharie Minions says Port Alberni is the perfect hub for coastal restoration companies.
“This is a company that is all about ocean and waterway clean-up and that is something that is so important to our council moving forward,” she said. “Where have been a community for a long time that maybe has contributed in a negative way a lot of the time to the environment, we are now proud to be supporting companies, and seeing companies coming to our community that are very much cleaning up and adding positively to waterways and the environment.”
Minions said the society has purchased a building in the uptown area for now, but have their eyes on part of the Somass Mill lands.
Coastal Restoration employs 250 people and will be looking to hire people this summer at a starting wage of $35 / hour.
