Literacy Alberni has launched a last-ditch fundraising campaign as they try to climb out of a hole left by their former administrator.
Board chairman Paul Thompson said financial and organizational mismanagement and legal costs have brought the society to the brink of closure.
“We’re a small organization that is in great need. We’re hurting,” he said. “The last year’s events haven’t really helped us in fundraising and unfortunately that funding that was lost was due to some paperwork errors from our previous management which we were not aware of until we went through e-mails once that person was off the premises. It’s been a bit of a disaster.”
Thompson said they have close to 100 people enrolled in english language lessons and adult literacy as well as tutoring and technological training for seniors.
Literacy Alberni have posted a $100,000 fundraising request on the website GoFundMe, and so far has raised just a few hundred dollars.
