Sockeye forecast released

Fisheries and Oceans Canada released its sockeye forecast this week, and is predicting low returns this Spring.

Scientists are recommending a precautionary approach to fishing Somass River sockeye, with a preseason estimated run size of 350,000 to 500,000 fish.

They say sea surface temperatures and salinity observed at Aphitrite Point during the Spring of 2019 and 2020 mean that marine survival rates are likely to be low, and escapements of Great Central Lake sockeye were the lowest ever observed.

Discussions will begin this month with the various fishery user groups to develop fishing plans.
