The city will be spending nearly $2 million to replace one of five main sewer pipes after a pair of major failures last year.
The 50-year old pipe first burst last summer, releasing almost 8000 cubic metres of sewage into the lower river estuary area between August 9th and 27th.
Another 1500 cubic metres was accidentally released on December 1st after the attempted repairs failed.
City Council approved the immediate expenditure of $400,000 to purchase the new pipe ahead of the contractor being selected to complete the project.
Director of Engineering Rob Dickenson said the faulty sewer line is no longer in use, and the load is being shared amongst the other main pipes.
