Police investigations have resulted in a change of charge against a 61-year old Port Alberni woman.
Samantha Dittmer was arrested in August after her 31-year old son Jesse McPhee was found dead inside their 18th Avenue home.
She was initially charged with one count of careless use of a firearm, which was changed to a charge of manslaughter using a firearm, and has now been increased to a charge of second-degree murder.
She remains free on $10,000 bail and will be back in court tomorrow.
