ALC Report just the beginning

A vocal critic of McLean Mill says the Agricultural Land Commissions’s recent decision to exclude part of the mill lands from the ALR should be cause to launch a remediation project.
Susan Roth says she agrees it can’t be used as agricultural land because of dioxins, furans, chromium and mercury, but believes the city should restore the lands through brownfield grants.
“I really wish they would make our environment a priority,” she said. “They know what’s in the ground, they know what’s in the soil, and the water is even worse in that pond, it’s disgusting, so take care of it. It doesn’t have to be immediate but there definitely needs to be a plan and it needs to happen.”
Roth, who lives downstream from the mill says dioxins are leaching into Kitsuksis Creek.
She suggests the mill be scrapped, soils replaced, and a tree nursery built.
