City Council further dissected their budget yesterday during a committee of the whole meeting.
Finance Director Andrew McGifford said the city has a surplus from 2021, and almost $9 million in reserves
Mayor Sharie Minions said having a large surplus means people were overtaxed.
“When you operate a $30 million budget you do have to leave a comfortable amount of space to make sure that you don’t go into deficit, and that said I think that we need to be really careful about how much we’re taxing and to make sure that we’re not overtaxing to intentionally create surpluses,” she said. “With reasonably large surpluses we’re doing a great job on not going over on our projects but at the end of the day we are really taxing slightly more than we need, and that’s a practice I’d like us to stop.”
Minions said she hopes to reduce the planned 5% tax increase down to 4%
