Port Alberni’s Overdose Prevention Site was extremely busy last year, reporting 27,360 visits, specifically for the purpose of witnessed consumption.
There were 53 overdoses inside the OPS, and in each case, staff responded and there were no overdose deaths.
The local OPS is operated by the Port Alberni Shelter Society, and is open from 8am until 8pm daily.
As reported last month, Port Alberni paramedics responded to more than 300 overdose calls last year, a 30% increase from the previous year.
