Three high-density projects approved

City Council approved three development applications for high-density projects representing 110 new units.

Mayor Sharie Minions said the building boom is adding to the tax-base, and not taxing city infrastructure.

“The exciting thing about the three applications we approved is that they are all in-fill developments,” she said. “Infrastructure is already existing and there is no extension of roadways or pipes or anything like that, it’s all infrastructure that is currently in the ground, which is the best type of development and certainly is the most cost-effective way to develop and the most benefit to the community when it’s infill rather than sprawl.”

Minions said Port Alberni is no longer a desperate community as there is lots of interest from developers in building high-density rental and strata-owned properties, which is a departure from the usual single family home developments.

“It really signals a shift that’s happening here in the community which traditionally was a single-family home built community,” she said. “We’re really seeing a lot more density which is exciting.”

Minions expects to set records this year as there are more projects in the queue.

The projects approved yesterday are on Anderson Avenue, 12th Avenue, and Woodland Crescent.
