Brownfield site to become green

Local community groups have come together to beautify the former PetroCan site at the corner of 10th and Redford.

John Douglas from the Port Alberni Shelter Society said his group along with the Salvation Army will work to beautify the brownfield site.

“It’s a very simple concept of making a brownfield look a bit nicer,” he said. “We’re basically looking at dirt, grass, gravel, and just making it look nice and a better looking site than it is now.”

The project is supported by SunCor, the City of Port Alberni, and the San Group.

The Alberni Valley Community Forest contributed $10,000 to beautify the lot, which has been vacant for almost a decade.

The Salvation Army and Shelter Society will provide volunteers to do the initial work, and then hope to hire people who need employment to maintain the site.
