Rogers is promising to improve cel service along highway 4 with the construction of six new cellular towers between Port Alberni and Tofino.
The project will provide 85 kilometres of new service from Sproat Lake to the Tofino Junction.
Warren Fletcher, Vice President, Access Networks, for Western Canada, said the biggest hurdle has always been the lack of utility power along the highway, so they’ll be looking at building solar, wind, and hybrid power sources.
“We don’t know which way we’re going to go yet. We still need to speak to the power utility company to see if it’s even feasible to step it down. If it is, that’s what we’ll do, if not then we’ll put in alternative power solutions like a generator hybrid or a solar / wind solution,” he said.
Fletcher said the project is estimated to cost $8 million and they hope to complete it by 2024
