Our non-profit organization, Valley Cats – Alberni Cat Rescue, is run by a small group of dedicated people. We are registered as a charitable society under the Government of Canada, and can issue charitable donation tax receipts for monetary contributions.
Since we formed as a society in September 2018, we have been working to increase our capacity to help control the feral and abandoned cat population in Port Alberni. Kittens born wild become increasingly difficult to socialize if they are not tamed by around 8 weeks of age. Feral and un-socialized abandoned cats are therefore treated as a nuisance, and generally are euthanized if they are trapped and surrendered to the SPCA.
To attempt to halt this cycle, our organization has centered our efforts on locating feral and abandoned kittens; providing vaccinations and basic vet care, and ensuring that 100% of the kittens or cats we adopt out are spayed or neutered. We have successfully spay/neutered and adopted out over three hundred kittens and cats as of November 2021. As each cat and their offspring can produce 21,000 kittens in their lifetime, we have successfully prevented thousands of new cats in our area.
To generally fund our efforts, we ask for an adoption fee for every kitten we successfully home, and this helps us to meet our vet, food and litter bills. We also need to reach out to the community for fundraising, as we don’t receive any adoption fee for feral cats we trap/neuter/release and fairly often cats and kittens will come to us needing extra vet care and medications which brings their costs to over the adoption fee we charge.
