A locally bottled water has again been named best-in-the-world.
Thunderbird Spirit Water, which comes from the sacred Tiitskin Pawaats, or Thunderbird’s Nest area near Henderson Lake, has won the gold medal at the Fine Waters Awards held last week in Slovenia.
Owned and operated by the Uchucklesaht Tribe, CEO Scott Coulson says the water is pristine because of its location down the Alberni Inlet.
“There’s no industry for 100 kilometres and no people, it comes from a very clean area,” he said. “A lot of springs are in cities and they’re dealing with microplastics; we have no microplastics in our water. The water comes from the ground and it goes through its natural cleaning from the ground. It has been a known source for the Uchucklesaht forever.”
This is the second international water competition Uchucklesaht has entered their water in, and both times they won gold, beating out waters from more than 50 countries, many of which sell for more than $100 a bottle.
Thunderbird Water sells for $7.50 a bottle and will be available through online sales and through their storefront at the bottom of Argyle Street.
Uchucklesaht are building a bottling facility on the Port Authority lands, and will be expanding their product line to include carbonated water, and expand their staffing level from 4 people to 12.
