Paper Excellence released it’s first-ever sustainability report this week, highlighting the company’s work to improve environmental standards.
According to the report, the company gets 77 per cent of it’s energy from biomass and another seven per cent from renewable hydro electricity.
They say greenhouse gas emissions have dropped 60 per cent since 1990, but admit a large part of the reduction was due to curtailments at some of its operations.
Here in Port Alberni, Paper Excellence has 310 employees, pays $36.7 million in salaries, wages and benefits, and $4.4 million in taxes.
$13 million capital improvement project will be completed within the next few months making food grade paper the bulk of local production.
According to vice-president Graham Kissack, the report is designed to better introduce the company to neighbours, customers, regulators and stakeholders.
