Illegal fires plague Alberni firefighters

Firefighters from throughout the Alberni Valley have been dousing human-caused fires over the past day, despite the extreme fire-danger rating.
Early this morning Port Alberni fire crews were called to a 100 square foot fire in the Roger Creek gully behind the Fall Fair grounds that was quickly spreading into the trees.
Deputy Fire Chief Wes Patterson says their might be a firebug that sparked this particularly dangerous fire.
“There’s no indication of any kind of encampment where we were, there was nobody around at the time,” he said. “It’s concerning that this is continuing to happen, and I know the RCMP are taking it quite seriously.”
Patterson said Cherry Creek volunteer firefighters were called out early yesterday morning to extinguish a small fire.
Beaver Creek volunteer firefighters were called out last night to extinguish an illegal campfire across from the Kaackamin Family Development Centre.
Fire Chief Mike Kobus said the BC Conservation Officer Service will be investigating and could be issuing a fine.
