Suspicious fires keep firefighters busy

A possible firebug kept Port Alberni fire crews busy yesterday.
6 small fires were doused, that could have easily become much bigger bush fires.
The first was a brush fire in Dry Creek Park near Anderson Avenue at around 2 p.m before crews extinguished a second brush fire in the same area, along with a small fire behind the Port Alberni Friendship Centre on Fourth Avenue and two at Harbour Quay.
Firefighters from Port Alberni and Beaver Creek battled a blaze behind the Alberni Athletic Hall last night, and spent the morning watching for hotspots.
Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owens said the fires are suspicious.
“Certainly it’s abnormal for us to receive so many outdoor fires and wildfire calls in a single day,” said Owens. “We’ve handed that part of the investigation over to the RCMP to investigate any elements of criminality, but certainly all the fires seem to be human-caused.”
Owens said no structures were at risk, and crews will be back on scene today to continue their investigations.
