Competing protests in front of MLA Josie Osborne’s office yesterday.
Environmentalists and Green Party supporters were holding signs demanding an end to old growth logging, while a few forestry workers and their families were demanding the opposite.
Judy Thompson said while she recognizes Port Alberni is a forestry town, she believes the future is in forest management.
“This used to be a logging town. It could still be a forestry management town if they planted as they were supposed to, if they didn’t ship out raw logs as they were supposed to,” she said. “We need a moratorium and we need better forest management.”
Maryann McFeeley said anti-logging protesters are misinformed.
“Really, get your facts straight. Don’t get it off of the Internet. Don’t get it off of an 18-year old that’s spouting off in Fairy Creek. Stop following the propanganda that’s being spread and get the real facts,” she said.
While some tempers did flare between the opposing protesters, they kept their distance while both claiming honking horns were for their side of the debate.
