The BC government announced 176 new childcare spaces in Port Alberni yesterday.
The City of Port Alberni will receive funding for 66 spaces, while the Huu-ay-aht First Nation will get 24 spaces, and School District 70 will get money for 81 new spaces.
Mid-Island-Pacific Rim MLA Josie Osborne said the announcement is welcoming news for Alberni Valley families.
“I think we’ve known for quite a long time that there has been a shortage of high quality, affordable, and accessible child care spaces,” she said. “The City of Port Alberni undertook a child care space assessment and looked at the needs across the valley. It means a remendous amount to families; not only does it mean their children get high quality care, but it also enable parents to work or to take education courses, and to live good lives.”
Osborne says since July 2018, a total of 235 new childcare spaces have been funded in Port Alberni.
