Port Alberni’s building boom continues, with an important piece of future community development announced yesterday.
A new 5-storey, 102 unit, seniors housing development will be the next big project on the former ADSS lands on Anderson Avenue.
Mayor Sharie Minions said this project is a major part of the local housing picture
“It is incredibly needed in the community,” said Minions. “The housing needs assessment that was done a few months ago does highlight the needs of seniors who want to move into independent living, assisted living, or downsize into smaller homes.”
Due to the slope of the land, architects say the building won’t block views from the upper subdivisions.
At least one neighbour raised concerns about parking, but the city engineer told council the developer will be installing 85 parking stalls, considerably more than the 45 required by the city for a project of this size.
Minions said she’s heard from many older residents about the need for this.
“We talk so much about attracting new people to the community but we don’t often talk about resident retention,” she said. “I hear stories from a lot of seniors in our community who are actually leaving when they get to 70 because we don’t have the kind of housing they need.”
