Probation conditions changed

Days before David Bird’s expected release from prison, lawyers were back in a Port Alberni courtroom yesterday, discussing his terms of release.

One of Port Alberni’s most violent offenders, Bird was sentenced to 4-years jail after pleading guilty to kidnapping David Williams in December 2018, tying him up and hitting him in the head multiple times with a stamp hammer over a ten hour period.

Bird was ordered to live with his mother in Sarita Bay upon release, but the Huu-ay-aht First Nation doesn’t want him there.

They recently passed a Community Safety Act preventing people convicted of serious crimes from living on their lands.

Judge Ronald Webb agreed to strike Sarita Bay from the probation conditions, allowing Bird to live anywhere.

He will be on probation for 3 years
