Port Alberni social service agencies will come together again to conduct a homeless survey, building on data collected over the years.
A ‘point-in-time’ study will happen on April 7th in Port Alberni, and then will be extended for 5 days after to include people camped in rural areas like Boot Lagoon.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the up-to-date data will allow the city to pursue more grants for housing options.
“I see this as a very positive thing as we know the provincial government is looking at our community for additional options, and we want those options here; we want to be able to house people in a variety of different ways,” she said.
In 2018, 147 people in Port Alberni were considered homeless, with 57% unsheltered.
