City Council will be going behind closed doors to decide what to do about a cluster of campers and trailers being rented out to some of Port Alberni’s most vulnerable citizens.
Mayor Sharie Minions met with controversial landlord Randy Brown and told him the 4th Avenue encampment was illegal and had to be removed.
She said having “no housing is better than housing that puts people at risk”.
“Those RV’s are not safe; they could go up in flames,” she said. “I worry every single day that somebody is going to be seriously hurt in one of those, so the city is moving forward on plans to have those removed. They do not meet the standard, and we are at the same time working on alternative housing options if the property owner is not going to provide them himself.”
Council heard police and paramedic calls have doubled in the area since the encampment was set up.
