A 200% increase in domestic violence cases has police and support services worried.
Port Alberni RCMP has a specialized domestic violence investigating officer, who works closely with victim services and the Alberni and Community Women’s Services Society.
Inspector Eric Rochette says having an officer dedicated to domestic violence cases shows police take the issue very seriously.
“With the introduction of a Domestic Violence Investigator and the work we’ve done with our community partners, I like to think that it helps victims to come forward knowing that they will be taken seriously and the matter will be investigated properly,” he said.
Rochette said domestic violence cases account for a third of all violent crimes in Port Alberni.
