Island Health has released localized data, detailing the spike in COVID-19 cases throughout the Central Island area.
Almost two-thirds of cases are in the Cowichan Valley, with most of the remaining cases in Nanaimo.
232 of the 366 confirmed cases came from the Cowichan Valley, while 116 were in Greater Nanaimo between late December and January 23rd.
Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Richard Stanwick says demographics play a huge role in how the virus moves.
“Populations where people are underhoused or marginally housed is associated with greater risk,” he said. “There is definitely a socio-economic gradient associated with this virus and the opprtunity for spread.”
Oceanside had 11 cases over the same time period, and just 7 cases in the Alberni-Clayoquot health district in the past month, 4 of which were registered in the past week.
