COVID funds are flowing into Port Alberni as the federal and provincial governments work to prop up local economies.
Economic Development Manager Pat Deakin was given the green light to apply for a $500,000 grant to improve the Roger Creek Trail, which the city had long been looking to do, according to Mayor Sharie Minions.
“This is a project that has been in the works for a long time, but was looking for the right funding opportunity,” she said. “As a result of COVID we’re seeing a number of significant grant opportunities that are really intended to build infrastructure and keep municipalities doing the work that they typically do, to make funds available to keep people working and keep people working on some of these larger projects.”
Minions said the city already had money put aside to improve signage in the park, and is willing to commit to $15,000 in annual maintainance of the trails as a condition of the grant.
The city has also applied for a $2.5 million grant for the Quay-to-Quay project, and $500,000 for the restoration of the train station.
