Property crime numbers decreased recently, which Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Eric Rochette credits to their crime reduction strategy.
He told city council yesterday that continued pressure on prolific offenders has helped to lower property crime numbers significantly in the last few months of 2020.
“The number of break & enters are significantly down by 81% compared to last year, and thefts from vehicles are down by 65%,” he said. “The number of violent offenses however are up by 19% compared to 2019.”
Mayor Sharie Minions said crime reduction will continue to be a focus of city council as well.
“You can expect the RCMP and non-police strategy budget to remain very similar in 2021,” she said. “We are seeing some good work and some good results, and while we might be taking steps in the right direction we have some significant challenges to be addressed in this community with regards to crime. It’s a start but it’s certainly not where we want to be yet.”
Minions said it’s troubling the violent crime numbers have increased, largely because a jump in domestic violence cases.
