A new emergency alert system is being launched today.
Voyent Alert! is a smartphone application which notifies subscribers about potential hazards and
emergencies where they live.
Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Protective Services Manager Heather Zenner, says the last tsunami warning event proved the need for improved communications.
“We heard loud and clear from residents from the tsunami warning in 2018 and they really want to get information quickly, so this system will allow the regional district and the city to notify our residents in a quick manner,” she said.
Voyent-Alert will cover residents of the city of Port Alberni as well as those in the rural areas and Bamfield, and is already in use in Parksville, Qualicum, Tofino and Nanaimo.
The service is free to the public, as the district pays the system cost of $4000 a year, plus a small fee every time a notification is sent out.
