Mayor Sharie Minions said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Port Alberni shone last year, showing true community spirit.
She said when facilities like the Bread of Life and other soup kitchens were forced to close, local agencies came together and quickly developed a new service delivery model to help those in need.
“We see that now with the Salvation Army food truck delivering food to several different locations every single day for people in need,” she said. “Really quickly every jumped into action, came together, and started working on a plan for how they could reach people and connect with people every single day in a new way, and I really think it speaks to Port Alberni and the kind of community that we are.”
Minions said other highlights of 2020 were the number of small businesses that opened, and the investment in the industrial sector by the San Group, Catalyst, Canadian Maritime Engineering, the Huu-ay-aht First Nation and Port Alberni Port Authority.
