City Council hit a wall with McLean Mill, and said they’re tired of having to respond to disaster after expensive disaster, forcing them to redirect funds from other municipal projects.
The issue came to a head yesterday after it was revealed an oil spill clean-up will cost city taxpayers $1.25 million.
Mayor Sharie Minions says council has had enough.
“Our council was elected and put together a very clear strategic plan of really significant improvements that we want to make in this community and we can’t do that when we keep having to spend a million dollars at the mill, $400,000 at the mill, $500,000 at the mill; it’s always something,” she said.
Engineers estimate 6000 litres of bunker oil were released from a locked tanker, and the city’s insurance will only cover up to $100,000 for clean-up.
The contaminated soil has been shipped to the lower mainland and Port Alberni RCMP are investigating the incident.
