Community Futures Alberni – Clayoquot has set a new precedent for the organization by buying a local business.
Coombs Country Candy will now become a social enterprise for Community Futures, and profits will go back into the organization, which provides services and program supports to entrepreneurs and owners of small and medium sized businesses.
Executive Director Lori Camire says for-profit not-for-profit organizations are becoming more common.
“A lot of not-for-profits or charities are starting to look at the acquisition of for-profit businesses to add a revenue stream so there’s less requirement to have only government funding as your only revenue source,” she said.
Award-winning confectioner Murray Lawlor will stay on to train a new batch of choclatiers, until February of next year and will continue to own the property along with partner Lenore Bailey.
