City approves hybrid firetruck

City Council gave the fire department early approval to purchase a new fire truck for 2021.

The new fire engine will replace fire truck #1, which has met it’s 30-year service limit.

Fire Chief Mike Owens said the new truck will be a diesel hybrid, which switches to battery power when at idle, saving on fuel costs and air pollution.

The $890,000 truck will be built by Fort Garry firetrucks of Winnipeg, which has built other firetrucks for the Port Alberni Fire Department.
