Fallen firefighter saluted

A sad procession will be coming through Port Alberni this evening.

The Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Department will be leading fire trucks and crews from upwards of 15 different island fire stations, as they carry the remains of fallen firefighter Lieutenant Ron Suits.

Sproat Lake Fire Chief Mike Cann said they will leave Comox at 3:15, and follow Highway 4 though Port Alberni around 5:30 this evening.

“We’re going to be picking up Lt. Suit’s ashes and transporting them back to Port Alberni via the Oceanside route,” said Chief Cann. “There’s people from Campbell River all the way down to Langford coming to pay their respects to Ron.”

Suits wife and daughter will also be on board the lead engine.

Suits was a 27 year veteran of the Calgary fire department before retiring to Sproat Lake and joining the volunteer force.

He died of a heart attack while battling a barn fire on McCoy Lake Road two weeks ago.
