Arena big-screen rebuffed

Port Alberni City Council has requested more information before committing $200,000 for a big screen TV at the multiplex.
Alberni Valley Bulldogs owner David Michaud says the screen would help the team recoup their six-figure income loss due to the coronavirus and last years ammonia leak by selling advertising, and would share revenues and repay the city within 8 years.
Mayor Sharie Minions says while the city sympathizes with their top tenant in the multiplex, they’re looking for a better business case for the investment.
“There’s certainly a case to be made for the revenue lost by the Bulldogs, but many businesses and organizations in our community are suffering loss right now,” she said. “We need to make sure that it is the right time now to move forward and our council is not there yet in making that decision.”
Minions said the LED wall should be part of a possible sponsorship deal to rename the arena, adding the request for proposals closed Monday with just one as-yet-un-named applicant.
