The Port Alberni Port Authority is responding to community concerns about the coronavirus and foreign freighter crews.
Mike Carter, the Director of Port Operations, says sailors arriving here from Asia haved already quarantined for almost 3-weeks on board.
“As the ship has been at sea for 14 to 20 days they’ve quarantied very well,” said Carter. “The general public needs to realize that they don’t want to catch COVID-19 either, especially if they’re healthy right now. They do not want to mingle in town for any longer than is needed because they don’t want to risk bringing COVID back to the ship.”
Carter said ship Captains have to send in a report when they’re 96- hours from port outlining their cargo, ballast, fuels and health of crew.
He said crews have a right to 4-hour shore leave in Canada and any concerns about them carrying COVID are misplaced.
