The city is shifting funds to the popular business facade program.
City Council had set aside some cash to support local businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic, but with 13 applications for facade funding, it was decided to put more money there.
8 facade improvement projects shared $50,000 from the city this year, and another $54,000 was shifted to assist a further five facades.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the funding remains targetted to helping local small businesses.
“We think this a really great way to stimulate some economic activity as COVID recovery,” she said. “This is a hugely successful program and people can look and see and feel the improvement that’s happening in our community because of it.”
Over the past 5 years the city has invested $187,000 in 40 facade improvement projects, which generated more than $1.2 million in investments.
One of the most high profile facade projects – the squash club on Third Avenue – was delayed after the city building inspector demanded an engineering report.
