Funding flows to city, regional district

Despite the economic slowdown, some funding is still flowing into city coffers.
On Friday, the provincial government announced $25,000 for emergency services support programs in Port Alberni, and $20,000 for regional emergency operations centre improvements.
Provincial funding was also announced for 48 new childcare spaces, with grants being shared by the Kaakamin Family Development Centre and Alberni Valley Saplings.
The money will allow Kaakamin to build a new child care centre on the  grounds of the former Beaver Creek Elementary School, and Alberni Valley Saplings will be able to extend hours to accomodate families who need care outside of traditional business hours.
On Monday, the Alberni Valley Community Forest Society presented the city with a cheque for $2 million.
AVCF Chairman Jim Sears said their operations produced a very healthy return last year.
City Council will discuss how to allocate the funds at their next meeting.
