About a dozen relatives of a Tla-o-qui-aht woman from Port Alberni who was shot dead by police in New Brunswick have arrived in that province to support her mother and daughter.
Courtenay – Alberni MP Gord Johns hit federal ministers yesterday with questions about the shooting and the investigation, and demanded they implement the recommendations from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls report.
“People are outraged. I’m outraged. The Minister expressed outrage and wondered aloud how this could happen, but the government has been dragging their feet on implementing the 231 calls for justice spelled out by the National inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls,” he said. “The Deputy Prime Minister as well in her response to my question in the House of Commons fell short that she agreed but still they don’t have any plan and they’re letting this report collect dust instead of taking the necessary steps and the action that’s required and is going to save lives in our country.”
New Brunswick’s aboriginal affairs minister and lieutenant-governor greeted Chantal Moore’s family members when they landed in Fredericton yesterday in a ceremony that featured drumming and singing.
The 26-year old was killed by a municipal police officer in Edmundston who was doing a wellness check on Thursday and said he was confronted by a woman holding a knife.
